MLA drags Hema Malini over farmer suicides in Maharashtra

Maharashtra Bachchu-Kadu Independent legislator Bacchu Kadu has courted controversy when he dragged BJP leader and actor Hema Malini into the issue of farmers’ suicides in Maharashtra.

Addressing the media in Nanded, Kadu, while negating claims that farmers committed suicide due to their drinking habit, said,

“If drinking alcohol is the reason for farmer suicide then there are many actors who drink daily. Doesn’t Hema Malini drink too? Why hasn’t she committed suicide?” he asked.

“Most of our MPs, MLAs and even the media drinks and Hema Malini too drinks heavily, but have they taken the extreme step.”

“Drinking is not the cause for farmers’ suicides. It is shortfall of money. Productivity has gone up, but not their income,” he said.

Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari also came under fire from Kadu. He said that Gadkari spent Rs 4 crore on his son’s marriage, “should we wait for him to commit suicide”.

Meanwhile, the BJP saw red at Kadu’s comments. The party said that the comments that Kadu has made against Hema Malini don’t only defame her, but all women in India.

Apart from being an MP, Hema Malini was well known for her acting prowess and Bharatnatyam. Kadu’s statements are silly. There are many reasons why farmers commit suicide, said a BJP Mahila Morcha office-bearer.

According to official data, more than half of the national figure of farmer suicides (5650) in 2014, have been reported in Maharashtra.  This is apart from 200 suicides in first three months of 2017.
