Madhur Sen on Art
PR Daroz is a prolific Indian sculptor as well as ceramic artist. He also
works on the potter’s wheel and murals. He is responsible for scaling
up the scope of ceramic art in India, from small utility-based domestic
objects and vessels to vast architectural installations. He has been
commissioned to create works for Sardar Patel Planetarium and hotel
Hyatt Regency, New Delhi, among many others. One of my favourite
works, titled Lama Heads, is made of ceramic, created on the potter’s
wheel and finally sculpted into heads. His works aren’t just driven by
form, but are very conceptual and deeply philosophical.

Sridala Swami on Books
Werner Herzog’s diary Conquest of the Useless: Reflection From the Making of Fitzcarraldo was written during the making of the lavish 1982 film Fitzcarraldo, the story of a would-be rubber baron. The relationship of Herzog, who was also the director, with the lead actor Klaus Kinski is captivating. As are the details of their shooting process, fraught with difficulties, in the Amazon region.

[box]Karan Nambiar on music
The progressive rock band Haken has released two stunning albums Aquarius and Visions. From metal to cabaret, jazz to pure ambient symphony, the band weaves it all in the most elegant of music writing fashion. Though some songs clock in at about 24 minutes, time just seems to pass by in pure astonishment. The guitar passages are technically sound enough to make your jaw drop and the keyboards replicate a whole symphony.

Mansoor Ahtsan on Film
Francis Ford Coppola’s 1979 film Apocalypse Now, inspired by Joseph Conrad’s novel Heart of Darkness, is set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War. Like in the book, the river is the most used symbol in the film. It is the geographical setting that links the different scenes together, while it also acts as a metaphor for the characters’ psyche. Marlon Brando is remarkable in a short but powerful role. He plays Colonel Walter E Kurtz, who runs his own operations out of Cambodia and is feared by the US military, North Vietnamese and the Viet Cong.

Bhupesh Jain on Food
Biryani Blues in Gurgaon serves authentic Hyderabadi cuisine and it excels in the soughtafter Hyderabadi staple, mutton biryani. The meat is cooked till tender and succulent, the rice has excellent flavour and the spice is just right. Even the vegetable dum biryani is delicious. All the ingredients come together in perfect amount for these dishes. Also, try the Andhra fish fry, prawn fry and the Hyderabadi sweets khubani ka meetha and double ka meetha. The restaurant is basic, simple and gives a homely feel. All efforts have gone into making the food worth coming back for.
