Prem Singh on Art
Jivan Adalja is veteran artist based in Delhi. His son and daughter were both born blind. That is why he emphasises eyes in his paintings. The work is essentially figurative and is often lauded for its simplicity, truthfulness, colours and expression. Adalja mostly uses acrylic and tempera colours with a lot of shades of red, yellow and blue. At times, he also paints in black and white. Adalja can use any surface as his canvas, ranging from floor to cloth to gunny bags. What strikes you most about his work is the gentle colouring and the expressions of the people’s faces.

JV Jones’ The Barbed Coil is set partly in the real world and partly in fantasy. The majority of the action plays out in a fantasy world where the laws of physics are standard yet magic can occasionally be created. The novel tells the tale of a touching romance and a bloody war, in addition to a kind of supernatural suspense story. Like many novels of the high-fantasy genre, The Barbed Coil too pays great attention to detail and has a strong, coherent plot.

Noor Kadiwala on Music
The duo named Hammock plays music that is a beautiful combination of ambient, post-rock and shoegaze. Each of their songs have a unique story to tell. There’s loss, love, longing. Their lush, dreamy soundscape has many layers of incredible, beautiful sonic textures with effect pedals, guitar, cello and, at times, angelic vocals. Their track You Lost the Starlight in Your Eyes talks about how people struggle to keep a genuine connection alive over a period of time.

Anand Nair on Film
Krzysztof Kieślowski’s The Decalogue is a series of a 10 one-hour long episodes made for Polish television. Each film deals with a different human conflict loosely based on The Ten Commandments. The story is set in a middle class apartment complex. He deals with the themes of sexuality, forgiveness and sin. Some characters drift through the stories as mere observers, like angels that watch but do not have the power to alter the events. The ch aracter who plays the observer could be an image of Kieślowski himself.

Grillopolis in Mumbai is my favourite restaurant. The decor is very European and relaxing. They specialise in Lebanese and Spanish cuisine. They have a prix fixe dining concept and a small à la carte menu. Go for the prix fixe dining menu as it gives you the choice of at least 10 grills that are served at your table. To add to that, they serve a spread of 10 main courses, five Mediterranean salads and a choice of at least six desserts. The à la carte menu also has some great grill choices if you are looking for a quick bite.
