Sayok Ray on Art

Chandi Lahiri is a cartoonist from Kolkata, whose works have been featured in newspapers for years. His cartoons are a satirical take on politics, social issues, and other everyday occurrences. He also had a series of comic strips that are a witty account of the relations between husband and wife, or wife and mother-in law and other familial bonds. His style of drawing is very simple as he uses sparse lines. His cartoons are very easy on the eyes without complicated strokes or unnecessary clutter. His sketches are lucid and humorous and often hold a certain depth and cleverness.

Arnab Ray on Books

There is nothing as terrifyingly bleak as Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, the story of a mysterious father and his son on a journey to nowhere in a postapocalyptic world, fighting hunger and cannibals and trying to maintain their humanity. It provides very little back-story or exposition, forcing readers to fill in the gaps with their imagination. What makes it rise above genre fiction is McCarthy’s prose that is stark, poetic and forbidding.

Ketan Bahirat on Music

Bengaluru-based The Bicycle Days plays alternative rock, clearly influenced by Radiohead. Their first official release 42 got me hooked, not to mention their powerpacked live performances. Tracks 27 and Circles are favourites with fans of the genre. They are currently recording their debut album named Calamitunes. They launched a preview track off the album titled Hush, which shows the new direction the band is headed towards.

For the King A still from Hero
For the King A still from Hero

Varun Gupta on Film

Zang Yimou’s Hero is a story about a nameless warrior, played by Jet Li. He tells the King of Qin a curious tale about three assassins he killed. But the king has a different story to tell about the warrior himself. This is a tale of love, honour, duty and what it means to be a hero. The director has a flair for the visual and the use of colour. He uses four colours to tie in four different narratives that tell a different story. Unlike traditional ‘wuxia pian’ or ‘martial chivalry’ film, this is about love, compassion and magnanimity of heroes.

Saransh Goila on Food

Bhai Bhai Omelette Centre in Surat might sound a bit unusual but this small restaurant reflects Indian cuisine really well. It’s located on a street connecting a Hindu and Muslim colony, which gives it the endearing name. They have 100 dishes on their menu all made out of eggs. Everything from starters to main course has some egg component to it. My favourite dish there is the anda palak, which had lots of spinach and cheese in it. The best part is that it is served with buns on the side. They even have a dessert called chocolate eggs.
