Deepak Seth on Art

Enchanting colours gave a mystic splendor to the paintings of Sobha Singh. The Sikh painter is a school of art in himself. Andretta (Himachal Pradesh), the place where he worked for nearly 40 years, is a place worth worshipping. His paintings were inspired by the romantic sagas of Punjab, Indian epics and Sikh religious traditions. He was more of a portrait painter and the portraits of Sikh gurus and that of Sohni Mahiwal and Heer Ranjha are some of his marvelous creations. He believed in painting the beauty and goodness of life. He was also skilled in western classical technique of oil painting.

Amit Mitra on Film

Murderball, by Henry Alex Rubin and Dana Adam Shapiro, is based on the wheelchair rugby teams of USA and Canada. Unlike most sports movies, here you start doubting who to support — the paralysed US captain Mark Zupan or so-called traitor and paralysed former US team captain Joe Soares, who is coaching Canada’s team. The two continuously switch roles of protagonist and antagonist. This Oscar-nominated documentary can give any high-budget Hollywood drama a run for its money.

Aseem Vadehra on Books

A Little History of the World by art historian EH Gombrich entertains as well as educates. It’s written in a manner that intrigues readers, making them read more. His most widely read book The Story of Art is written with extreme clarity and a simplicity that sparks an interest in art. The book clearly explains Gombrich’s idea of art being inborn within all of us. The act of art predates language.

Viji Varadarajan on Food

The Annalakshmi chain in Chennai originated from a restaurant in Malaysia started by the monk Shantananda. The bisi bele huli anna with the fresh taste of spices and homemade ghee is to die for. The small fenugreek soaked dosa has the fresh flavour of methi, and the white coconut chutney accompanying it is delicious with the flavour of green chillies and asafoetida. The black night shade or macoy used to prepare vethal kuzhambu (a thickened tamarind sauce without dal) is an outstanding accompaniment to rice and yoghurt sweetened by a dash of ripe pomegranate.
