Gautam Bhatia on Art

Vineet Kacker is one of the few ceramicists who has elevated an essential craft into high art. He uses his training as an architect to construct varied architectonic forms in clay — pagodas, towers, monastic pillars — using a range of unconventional glazes to make glossy and dry surfaces that have both an ancient archaic quality as well as a strange modernity. Kacker often describes his work as “a Japanese car being blessed by its new owners at a Hindu temple”: an uncomfortable resolution between opposing, contradictory ideas that combine digital printing, Buddhist cymbals, metal tridents and even a video into the ceramic process.

Dhananjai Chopra on Books

In The Afternoon Of Time, an autobiography by Harivansh Rai Bachchan, translated by Rupert Snell, is a record of Indian society in Bachchan’s time. He speaks of his childhood days, of the struggle a common man goes through in all spheres of his life and about rebuilding his life. The chapter ‘State of Emergency’ is a wonderful example of a literary person looking at Indian politics through his spectacles.

Ankit Tanwar on Music

Californian band Korn, fronted by Jonathan Davis, is highly experimental with its songs, giving them ingenuity through mixes and remixes. It was the first band to be called ‘nu metal’ as their experiments with beats, instruments and music could not be categorised. The band has been inspired by Indian instruments, using dholak beats as percussion in some of their tracks.

Lalit Joshi on Film

Dariush Mehrjui’s Iranian film Leila has deployed creativity in ways so as to not offend censors, and also not suppress the voice of the female protagonist. A modern Iranian couple Leila and Reza find out that Leila cannot conceive. The film shows her husband as supportive yet caught in familial circumstances and the pressure for a male heir. Polygamy, modern Iranian family and the emotions of both men and women lie at its core. The film throws light on the rights of a woman and how she asserts it when the time comes.

Nikhil Bhalla on Food

For those hunting for the best Punjabi food, Punjabi By Nature,New Delhi, brings a blend of food and hot, spicy innovations. Their ‘Punjab-eraan’, a tandoori lamb, and the butter chicken preparation have a trail of satisfied and sated customers. The vodka golgappa is outstanding as the burning vodka shots and crunchy golgappas explode in one’s mouth. The long island iced tea is another delightful drink. Made with one part of each vodka, gin, tequila and rum it is well mixed, not too sweet yet not too bitter or potent .
