Julien Segard on Art

Italian conceptual artist Alighiero Boetti was an abstract expressionist who used very simple elements on huge canvases to express himself. Human life, death and destiny were some of his most common subjects. Part of the Italian art movement Arte Povera, he worked with the simplest of techniques, and materials like ball pens. One of his most famous works is Mappa, in which he embroidered the map of the world with the flags of every country. His work is poetic and has humanity in it. It can touch anybody and you don’t need an art background to understand and appreciate it.

KU Mohanan on Film

Andrei Rublev is a 1966 Russian art film directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, one of the masters of Russian cinema. Set in the medieval period of Russian history, the film is based on the life of the 15th century priest and icon painter Andrei Rublev. The film has beautiful imagery and is technically very well made. Anatoli Solonitsyn, who plays Rublev, has given a superb performance as a peace-loving priest caught between finding artistic freedom and expression and an authoritative regime.

Sagar Vyas on Music

In just two years, the Belgian brothers Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike have set the international dance charts on fire. Their music is trendy and catchy and has given a whole new meaning to the world of electronic dance music. Their editing skills and remixes have increased their demand and popularity along with their crowd-pleasing live performances. They have come up with their own label called Smash The House. Their latest track Madness is my favourite.

Janice Pariat on Books

Quiet Days in Clichy is Henry Miller’s memoir of his hazy hedonist days as a young man in Paris. Miller and his roommate Alfred Perles live broke and hungry, navigating through a series of relationships with women — mostly runaways, damaged and sometimes cruelly crazy. The book, though dark and troubling, is a fantastic celebration of art, love, and of course, Paris. The city comes alive in all its breathless beauty and grime.

Pavan Soni on Food

The authentic Korean cuisine served at Gung – The Palace is one of the best that New Delhi has to offer. The ambience is great as it offers a private dining area, which makes it intimate and comfortable. Some of the dishes are cooked on live stations at the patron’s table, which makes the dining experience even more special. Bulgogi is my favourite dish. All the meat they serve is imported and the Korean flavours and spices are authentic. Unlike Indian preparations, the meat is typically cooked in its own juices. They serve beer as well as soju — a Korean liquor distilled from rice.
