Airing her thoughts about President Pranab Mukherjee’s successor, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on March 24 BJP leaders LK Advani or Sushma Swaraj or Mukherjee take over as the next President of India.
Mukherjee, whose term as the President will come to an end on July 24, can also take over for a second term, she added.
Asked if she would extend support to any of them, Banerjee said, “It will depend on what is good for the country,” she said. TMC has a good presence in Parliament and the State Assembly and thus can play a vital role. I also share a rapport with Union Home Mnister Rajnath Singh and Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.
Queried whether Trinamool Congress would support Advani, Banerjee said, “It’s too early to say anything.”
She said, “Some names are already doing rounds (as next President). I respect LK Advani and Swaraj and would be happy if either of them became the President. It would be good if Mukherjee got re-elected.”
A respected politician, Advani had served as the Home Minister and the Deputy PM under Atal Behari Vajpayee. After 2009, the party started elbowing Advani and brought in Modi.
Meanwhile, Swaraj has been associated with the BJP for a long time. As the Minister of External Affairs, Swaraj plays godmother to stranded Indians across the world.
She is popular among the citizens, but is unlikely to be nominated to the post considering her importance in the party.
But with the Babri Masjid demolition case raising its head again (Supreme Court deferred it by two weeks), Advani’s name might restrict any plans of elevating him to the post of the President of India.
