Maldives President Abdulla Yameen had a narrow escape when an explosion ripped through a speed boat carrying the leader. The incident injured his wife and other others, a minister said.
The president was returning home after performing Haj in Saudi Arabia when the incident happened and it is not clear what caused the blast on the presidential craft as it docked in the capital island Male, and injured the first lady.
Minister Mohamed Shareef said the blast occurred on Monday morning as the boat reached the main jetty in the capital of Male. Gayoom’s wife, Fathimath Ibrahim, and several officials suffered minor injuries. Shareef said the cause of the blast, thought to have happened in the engine room, was not known.
Boating accidents and fires are common in the Indian Ocean archipelago state. Authorities have launched an investigation, said Shareef. “The first lady Fathimath Ibrahim, a senior protocol officer, and a bodyguard of the president, were hurt and taken to hospital.”
The president was unhurt and he escorted the first lady to hospital where she is under observation following a minor injury, he said.
