gunfight, mass shooting at new orleans

A 36-year-old software engineer was arrested from Alapuzzha district of Kerala for allegedly murdering his father, a US-based NRI, over a property dispute. The techie, Sherin John, shot dead his 68-year-old father, Joy V John, with a stolen pistol and then attempted to burn the corpse, the police said. Then he chopped the partially burnt body into several pieces and dumped them at various spots. The police recovered Joy’s hand and legs from Pampa river while his head was found at a warehouse. Other body parts were recovered from a garbage pile in Changanacherry. The police had started the search after John confessed to the crime. The police have also recovered the pistol.

“The recovered body parts will be sent for DNA testing and other scientific analysis. As per our preliminary investigation, property dispute between the father and son had led to the murder,” Alapuzzha district police chief was quoted.

The incident had come to light when Joy’s wife Mariamma lodged a complaint with the police after he went missing last Wednesday.

Joy, who lived with Mariamma in the US, had come to his ancestral house in Alapuzzha on May 19. The police said that Joy used to beat up Sherin as a child and refused to give him his share of property. A grudge against his father finally led to the murder, the police said. Sherin was in the US till 2013. He was currently employed with an IT company in Thiruvananthapuram.

The police have booked Sherin for murder.
