Kerala Rape case: Priest, nuns surrender


kerala-rape-priest-nuns-surrenderFr Joseph Therakam who is the former chairman of  Wayanad Child Welfare Committee, Sister Ophilia, superintendent of Holy Infant Mary Orphanage and another Sister Betty surrendered before the police at Kannur, Kerala on March 17.

The trio was accused of covering up the rape of a teenager that took place in May 2016 and protecting the accused, Father Robin Vadakkuncheri. Later the girl gave birth to a baby.

According to the police, the priest had raped the girl during the summer vacation in May 2016. During that time, along with other girls, she was engaged in entering data in the parish computer.

Father Robin alias Mathew Vadakkencheril, 49-year-old was arrested on February 28 for raping a 17-year-old school girl at his parish at St Sebastian’s Church in Kottiyoor.

The Father has been charged under stringent provisions of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POSCO) and IPC.

Police received an anonymous letter reporting the crime on February 25. The victim’s statement in which she initially gave her father’s name but after further questioning of the parents and the victim revealed the accused.
