Kenyan woman not attacked, withdraws complaint after police find loopholes

In a fresh development, Maria Burendi, the Kenyan woman who was allegedly assaulted in Greater Noida has withdrawn her complaint after the Police found loopholes in her story.

Burendi had alleged that she was pulled out of her cab and thrashed by four men in the early hours of March 29, but the police found irregularities in her story. Later the Ola cab driver was tracked down and he denied that any such incident had taken place. The GPS movement and the payment slip also showed that the car was not stopped during the journey.

According to Nigerian Citizen Welfare Association, the woman had mental stress and probably got into a fight with her friends.

“We investigated the matter later in the evening yesterday and found that the woman was under distress due to personal issues. She had cooked up this story and we would like to offer our apologizes to the Police and people,” said Charles Kennedy, vice-president, Nigerian Citizen Welfare Association.

“We interrogated the driver and he revealed he dropped her safely at her drop location at Omicorn society in Greater Noida. GPS movement of car and payment slip of Ola cab driver show that car’s movement was not stopped during the journey. The lady has been lying”, said Dharmendra Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).  “According to the evidences and on the basis of the statement of the driver, we can conclude that the woman is lying and that no such incident took place last night,” he added.

UP DGP Javeed Ahmad tweeted “Alleged attack on Kenyan lady in Gnoida. Glaring loopholes in her story. Working to ascertain motive.”

In order to reduce tensions between Africans and locals, Police have decided not to frame any charges against the woman.

Meanwhile, Frederick, a Kenyan high commission representative, said that the embassy was satisfied with the way the police have conducted the investigation.

“We are satisfied with the police investigation into the matter and the police have assured us that they will not press any charges against the woman,” he said.

Earlier this week, a mob had thrashed four Nigerian nationals in Greater Noida following the death of a teenager.
