Presently the Parliamentary Affairs Minister in the Central Government, Kamal Nath also serves as the chief troubleshooter for the UPA government. His personal ambitions in the state don’t seem to amount to much as he has been a minister at the Centre for the last nine-and-a-half years. Kamal Nath pays special attention to the development of his constituency, Chindwara, from where he is the sitting Member of Parliament. At present he has thrown his weight behind Scindia and has conveyed to the party leadership that Scindia would be ideal to lead the party. Kamal has even conveyed to his own constituency that he is their man at the Centre. The main reason which keeps him going in the Congress is his closeness and undying loyalty to the Gandhi family. He was a close aide of Sanjay Gandhi – both went to school together. It is a well-known fact that when Nehru and Indira Gandhi paid visits to Rajiv and Sanjay in Doon School, Kamal Nath would also go out with them. Kamal was even jailed during Emergency along with Sanjay Gandhi.
Kamal Nath hails from the Jabalpur Mahakaushal Division, where the total number of seats are 44, and at present the Congress has 17 of them. There are nine districts: Jabalpur, Katni, Dinduri, Mandla, Balaghat, Seoni, Narsinghpur, Chindwara and Betul. But the Congress has no leader in Jabalpur and Seoni, which reflects in its bad performance in the region. Only in Chindwara and Betul, where the Congress has Kamal Nath, is the performance of the Congress slightly better. The fight here is a direct one between the Congress and BJP.
