Jharkhand police say 12 maoists killed in encounter

12 suspected Maoists were gunned down in a late-night joint operation, by the CoBRA unit of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and state Police, in Palamu district of Jharkhand, on Monday.

“The encounter took place in Bakoria village, about 140 km from Ranchi in the wee hours. All the bodies have been recovered,” Superintendent of Police Mayur Patel said.

PTI reported SN Pradhan, Additional Director General of Police (Operation), to have said that, the encounter took place around 1 am.

He also said, the CoBRA battalion and the district police rushed to the spot, following intelligence inputs, that the Maoists were moving in the district. On seeing the personnel, the Maoists got down from the vehicle and started firing at them, Pradhan said. In the retaliatory action, 12 rebels were gunned down, he added.

The police officer said, the Maoists were moving in two vehicles, and while one vehicle sped away, the Naxalites from the other vehicle got down and opened fire at the police. He said, it was the dasta (firing squad) of CPI (Maoist) ‘zonal commander’ RK, alias doctor.
