Senior advocate Ram Jethmalani on April 4 said that “If he (Arvind Kejriwal) cannot pay me (lawyer’s fee), I will treat the Delhi Chief Minister as a poor client and appear free of cost.” He added, “Anyway, I charge the rich and work for the poor free of cost.”
Even as he said this, Kejriwal wants the common man (aam aadmi) to foot his expensive legal bills. And so Deputy CM Manish Sisodia signed the bills, which add up to a whopping Rs 3.42 crore, and forwarded them to the Delhi LG Anil Baijal for clearance. The LG is in consultation with experts in this regard.
For those who do not know, Jethmalani charges Rs 22 lakh per court appearance and Rs 1 crore as retainership fees. He had appeared in court 11 times so far.
Kejriwal has some of the best legal brains, including senior advocate Ram Jethmalani—he is the most expensive lawyers today—on his side in the cases filed against him by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
It may be noted here that in 2015, Jaitley filed a criminal defamation complaint against Kejriwal and five AAP leaders for their comments on Delhi District Cricket Association row and a civil defamation suit before the Delhi HC seeking Rs 10 crore in damages.
Initially, Jethmalani offered to represent Kejriwal free of cost. However nine months later, he began to send bills for clearance to the CM.
This is just not done, is it? claimed AAP sources.
