The accused constable, Chandra Shekar, ran away with an assault rifle and 70 rounds of bullets from Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA). The ITBP guards the premier institute on this hill station in Uttarakhand.
The incident is said to have started on 9 July when over some disciplinary issue, SI Surendra sentenced Shekar for a day’s punishment
Peeved with his superior, the constable opened fire with a light machine gun killing Surendra on the spot and injuring constable Mohammed Alam on 10 July evening.
ITBP director general Krishna Chaudhary ordering a court of inquiry into the incident, directed the unit’s replacement from the task.
Officials said it was suspected that an altercation broke out between the duo and subsequently Shekhar grabbed a light machine gun and shot three bullets into the SI and a few others standing nearby.
Senior ITBP commanders, local police officers and the administration officials rushed from Dehradun to the academy. Officials said a manhunt has been launched to nab the accused.
