Giving a slight relief to train passengers, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) which handles tourism, catering and online ticketing operation has tied up with private airlines to allow train travelers whose ticket are in wait-list to convert their train ticket into an airline ticket at a competitive fare.
To avail the benefit , passengers have to pay an incremental fee. Passengers would also pay less for the air tickets than the prevailing spot prices for such air tickets.
The facility, however, is only available on train routes that are also served by airlines. The scheme is applied only to tickets booked at least three days prior to the date of the journey. The flight tickets would be made available only for the day of the train journey or a day after that.
IRCTC spokesperson Sandip Dutta said, “We have also entered into an understanding with SpiceJet under the scheme and plan to rope in other domestic carriers too.” In the past one month, about 100 tickets have been sold through GoAir. IRCTC would be sending e-mails to waitlisted passengers who seek get the facility. Passengers booking train tickets right from sleeper class to AC classes can avail the facility, Mr Dutta said.
