Royal Challengers Bangalore qualified for the play-offs of the Indian Premier League after their last league match against Delhi Daredevils in Bangalore was called off due to heavy rain. Moments after rain interrupted play and the covers were drawn, the batsmen at the crease, Kohli and Chris Gayle, walked back to the pavilion.

Though the RCB qualified for the play-offs, a controversy soon emerged. RCB skipper Virat Kohli defied the players’ rules and was  seen in the corridor right next to the VIP box where his girlfriend, Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma, was seated much to the amusement of the public.

Soon the duo was on the giant screen at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, and the host broadcaster too cashed in on the visual treat to relay it to households everywhere. Later Delhi Daredevils batsman Yuvraj Singh also joined the duo. Technically, a match is alive till the last ball is bowled and a rain stoppage doesn’t give players the liberty to leave their designated area and mingle with people.

BCCI has hired Anti-Corruption and Security Unit, an ICC watchdog, to provide cover to cricket players and monitor the activities both on the ground and the team hotel during the Indian Premier League. The ACSU has laid down the rules that do not allow cricketers to meet with their girlfriends or wives during a game.

An Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) authority was of the view that Kohli’s actions were immature, considering he is the captain. “He is the captain of the team, so he is very much aware of the rules that apply to players and more so to a captain. Nobody is allowed to meet players while the match is on. And players can’t go out of their designated area to meet anyone either. We will definitely look into the matter and inform the BCCI,” the ACSU officer said.

“It is unbecoming of a player. Players’ wives and girlfriends do attend matches but they sit in a separate enclosure. I’ve never come across anyone meeting them while the match is on. One can imagine a newcomer doing that but not a seasoned player who is aware of the protocol,” another ACSU officer with past IPL experience stated. Moreover, for flamboyant Virat Kohli it seems there are no rules for meeting his lady love Anushka Sharma.
