‘Girls in big cities don’t know how to dress properly’

Moolchand, 42
Sarpanch, Dhana village, Manesar, Haryana

What do you think of the recent rape in Delhi?
It was a brutal act. The way the girl was raped and tortured and left to die on the road, is condemnable. The six accused should be hanged right away.

Do you believe women are to blame for these incidents?
Most of the time, it’s the men who are to blame. But usually, the rapes are just consensual sex where the girl later changes her mind either for money or something else.

Do you think rapes happen more in big cities than in small towns and villages?
Rapes are meant to happen in big cities. In small towns and villages, the women cover their body. But in cities like Delhi or Gurgaon, the girls don’t know how to dress properly. The girl should be covered in a way that no skin is visible.

Do you think Indian women are given enough freedom?
Definitely, they are given a lot of freedom. A lot of women from my village work in nearby Gurgaon. Every girl goes to school or college.

What’s your take on pre-marital sex?
Unfortunately, it does happen nowadays. Though it has never been part of our culture, the men and women today are interacting more than before.
