Indian men on women: In their own words – Haryana

‘Why should a girl remain unmarried even in her late twenties?’

Ram Kishen, 53
Farmer, Bhiwani, Haryana

What do you think of the recent rape in Delhi?
This was not a mere incident of rape. Those who committed this crime are animals. Rapes happen every day, but most are not as gruesome as this one. Here, they tortured the girl and killed her. The perpetrators should get the worst possible punishment.

Do you think rapes happen more in big cities than in small towns and villages?
Yes, and it’s because girls in the big cities are given too much freedom. They are allowed to go out with men and they roam about in the city at night. What else do we expect under such situations?

Do you believe women are to blame for these incidents?
They are solely responsible. Marry them off when they are 15 years old. Why should a girl remain unmarried even in her late twenties? Even married girls run away from their in-laws’ house with other men. Such women destroy families and the lives of men, but they are not punished, while the men who are trapped by them into committing such crimes are punished.

Do you think of the way women are treated in this society?
They are treated in the best possible way. They are given as much freedom as men. They work, drive and do not wear traditional clothes. Now, just to empower girls, the government is inducting them into the army. It will weaken the army and is harmful for the security of the country.

Do you feel popular culture has an effect on the rising rate of crimes against women?
Surely, popular culture is to blame. People do in real life whatever is shown on television and in films.
