Imran Batuk arrested for involvement in Gujarat carnage


GODHRA DAXESH0008The Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch on July 13 arrested Imran Batuk alias Sheru from Malegaon in Maharashtra for his involvement in 2002 Godhra carnage in Gujarat.

At present, the accused is into the business of sand mining. Before Imran, Farooq Bhana, the main accused of the 2002 riots was arrested.

“Imran is a key accused who set the coach of Sabarmati Express on fire. His name figures in the second chargesheet as one of core accused,” said Joint Commissioner of Police JK Bhatt.

Bhana, who was a corporator when Godhra riots erupted, had moved to Mumbai to evade arrest. Absconding since 2002, he became a property broker in Mumbai.

The Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team had charged as many as 94 persons in the case. In 2011, 31 people were convicted, while the rest were acquitted. Eleven have been sentenced to death, and their appeal petitions are awaiting judgment in the Gujarat HC.
