A Malayalam film director supported the claim of Sunni Muslim leader Kanthapuram Aboobacker Musliyar, saying, madrassas in Kerala are also not free from sexual abuse.
He said, “I was sexually exploited by an ustad (teacher) when I was in a madrassa.” Film director Ali Akbar said, when he studied in Class 6, at a madrassa in Wayanad district, his teacher had sexually abused him.
“That madrassa was run by Kanthapuram Musliyar. If Musliyar will look into the issue, I will give the required details (about the ustad),” said Akbar.
Akbar spoke out about his time in a madrassa, after a scribe, VP Rajeena, alleged that, teachers abused girls, and boys, in her madrassa, in a Facebook post. The post triggered an outpouring on social media on the issue, with many people saying, they too had faced sexual abuse in madrassas. One of them said, “Instead of abusing that woman, such elements who commit the crime should be exposed.”
“The ustad sexually exploited every student in my class regularly. The practice is still going on. But, none is ready to speak. When leaders such as Kanthapuram Musliyar are heading the madrassa education system in Kerala, who will have the temerity to complain against an ustad,’’ questioned Akbar.
“The incident…in early 1970s left an indelible mark on my conscience. I felt defiled. Now I cannot think of sending my children to a madrassa,’’ said Akbar. He added, “Having been anointed into the art by the ustads, many students of my class started abusing their classmates.”
