Members of Hindu Yuva Vahini a right-wing group formed by UP CM Yogi Adityanath barged into a house and assaulted an inter-faith couple in Meerut on April 11. The couple was allegedly found in a “compromising” position after which the members of the group thrashed the Muslim man accusing him of love-jihad. The incident occurred in Shastri Nagar locality of the city, the group and the residents later handed over the couple to the police.
“I have asked the police to take strict action as the Muslim boy was romancing with a Hindu girl in the house. He wanted to convert her religion. I also insist to take strict action against the landlords, who give rooms on rent without proper verification,” said Nagendra Singh Tomar, head of Hindu Yuva Vahini in western Uttar Pradesh.
A video of the incident has also come up, the couple is bombarded with questions like “Where are you from? What are you doing here? Name your baap (father)? The quizzing of the couple continues with questions like “Why your names are different? Have you converted?”
According to reports, the man identified as Wasim had called his girlfriend to a rented room in Shastri Nagar but local residents informed some members of Hindu Yuva Vahini who reached the spot with a huge group and dragged the couple out of the room. The police later released the girl but detained the man on charges of obscenity.
Earlier also the group has been accused of moral policing. Yogi Adityanath had founded the Hindu Yuva Vahini in 2002 though now he has distanced himself from the organisation.
