Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the last rites of former president APJ Abdul Kalam in Rameswaram. He had also described Dr. Kalam’s demise as a loss of “Ratna (gem) of Bharat”.

Rameswaram, the birth place of people’s president, APJ Abdul Kalam, waits for the mortal remains of the great leader who inspired billion hearts. The funeral of the former President will be held in Rameswaram, today with full military honours.

The special aircraft, carrying his soulless body, had taken off at around 8:20 am for the South Indian state. Scores of people have gathered at former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s house  to pay their last respects

“People in large numbers have assembled at Kalam’s house to pay their last respects,” A.P.J.M.K. Sheik Saleem, the former president’s brother’s grandson told IANS over the phone. “All our relatives have also come to attend the last rites,” he added.

On Tuesday, President Pranab Mukherjee received the body of Kalam. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung were present at Palam airport and paid their last respect to the leader. The Army, Navy and Air Force also paid their last respects to the mortal remains of the former president.

US President Barack Obama also offered his condolences on the death of former president APJ Abdul Kalam, saying he was an inspiration to millions who worked to deepen space cooperation between the two countries.

“On behalf of the American people, I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the people of India on the passing of former Indian President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam,” Obama said in a statement. “A scientist and statesman, Dr Kalam rose from humble beginnings to become one of India’s most accomplished leaders, earning esteem at home and abroad,” he said.

The much loved President, Dr. Kalam, died after he suffered a massive cardiac arrest and collapsed during a lecture at the IIM in Shillong. He was confirmed dead more than two hours after he was wheeled into the ICU of Bethany hospital in a critical condition following the collapse at around 6.30 pm.
