Gujarat was once again witness to a riot-like situation when supporters of Hardik Patel, leader of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti set police vehicles and local transport ablaze following Patel’s arrest in Ahmedabad.
Cases were reported in Bapa Nagar area, where a car and local bus was light on fire by the agitating protesters. As many as five Bus Road Transport (BRT) stations on National Highway 8 were ransacked. Even the highway was closed for traffic by the miscreants.
In the Vastral area, two trucks were set ablaze and local shops were vandalised. In Naroda Patiya, highly sensitive area vis a vis communal clashes, stone pelting has been reported in which a policeman got severe head injury. Even in Chandlorhia and Ghatlorhia areas stone pelting took place.
On the SD Highway, near Gujarat High Court, protesters tried to put the nearby police station on fire. The situation has become serious in Nikol area where members of Patel and Thakur community have come joined the protest.
The rally in GMDC Ground, which witnessed gathering of more than 10 lakh people who were demanding OBC Quota for Patels, ended with Hardik Patel’s declaration of starting fast. However, he was arrested later in the evening. Later police released Hardik Patel considering the situation in the city as they do not want any further trouble. Police commissioner Shivanand Jha in a press conference yesterday expressed serious concern over the clashes. As a result of the clashe,s curfew has been declared in Ahmedabad.
