Gurez Avalanche: 4 more bodies recovered, toll reaches 14 in J&K


kashmir avalancheIn another shocking blow to the Indian Army, an army post was hit by avalanche. Four bodies of soldiers have been recovered on January 26 from the avalanche site in Bandipora district’s Gurez sector of Kashmir taking the death toll to 14.

“Four bodies of soldiers were recovered from the avalanche site by rescue teams in Gurez today. The death toll of army personnel has now risen to 14,” a police official said.

The army soldiers were patrolling the Gurez sector when the avalanche struck them on January 26.

Rescue and search operation is going and almost eight soldiers have been rescued. According to the army officials, the rescue team was hit by a fresh avalanche as they were headed to the sector.

Alerts warning of highly dangerous avalanches have been issued by the authorities in the northern state due to the region witnessing continuous snowfall since the past three days. The weather department has predicted that the avalanches could threaten till January 28.

Also, warnings have been given for high snow avalanche till January 28 evening in hilly areas of Kupwara, Baramulla and Kargil in Jammu and Kashmir.

Further, due to the continuous snowfall and avalanches Kashmir is cut off from rest of country for the fourth consecutive day.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar consoled the deaths of soldiers.
