Gujarat’s Shame

TEHELKA’S relentless investigations into the phone records of Gujarat’s MoS for Home has finally nailed Amit Shah’s links with the killer cops of the state. India reacts to the story that blew his cover

‘The buck does not stop with the Amit Shahs or Chudasamas. As told to the SC, the state police tried to cover up by saying that the dead “terrorists” came to kill Modi. The HM is Modi, and it is his responsibility. But then morals and Modi don’t mix.’
SHAKTISINH GOHIL,
Leader of Opposition, Gujarat

‘The encounters were used by Modi and company to — (a) show Gujarat’s commitment in controlling Muslim terrorism; (b) project a clear threat to Modi by pan-Indian Muslim militants. Why, then, did the encounters stop after Vanzara’s arrest? Now we have direct and circumstantial evidence of Amit Shah’s involvement in the encounters. Moreover, Sohrabuddin was used as an extortionist, and eliminated over a difference of opinion. The CBI should suo motu investigate this extortion business too.’
RB SREEKUMAR,
Former DGP, Gujarat.

‘There is a consistent hate campaign against Gujarat. There are inquiries, exposés, commissions, SITS, CID, CBI, High Court and Supreme Court. I’m not saying there is no truth in the call records. All I am saying is that truth will prevail, the guilty will be found.’
PRAKASH JAVADEKAR,
Spokesperson, BJP

‘The fake encounters are part of a plan by Modi and Amit Shah. Modi tried to project himself as a hero under attack from terrorists to consolidate his vote bank. He created a fake scare among Gujaratis.’
ARJUN MODHWADIA

Senior Congress Leader, Gujarat

‘Evidence points to Shah’s involvement and he must resign. The BJP has lost any credibility it had in the state. ’
ACHYUT YAGNIK,
Political Analyst and Author

‘The government must be accountable to people, not party. Ministers like Shah think they decide who will live or die. He should be charged under Section 302 of the IPC.’
SHANKARSINH VAGHELA
Former CM, Gujarat

‘Congratulations to TEHELKA. The Centre should take suo motu notice of this incident. We will try and raise the issue of subversion of justice in Gujarat on the floor of the House.’
BRINDA KARAT
CPM Politburo Member

‘I don’t know the facts that you’ve alleged about Shah’s phone records in connection to the encounters. I need to check them first to comment.’
RAVI SHANKAR PRASAD,
Spokesperson, BJP

‘Unfortunately, everybody in this country is corrupt. Therefore, TEHELKA’S effort is laudable. We hope this bears fruit. But don’t assume that things will happen the way you want them too. That is like aiming for the moon.’
SHANTI BHUSHAN
Activist and Lawyer

‘This raises the oft asked question — what happens when the protectors of the law become the perpetrators of crime?’
ABHISHEK MANU SINGHVI
Spokesperson, Congress

‘Shah was Ahmedabad District Cooperative Bank chairman in 2002. He was not yet in power, but in touch with top cops like Shivanand Jha and others. It’s strange that agencies do not use the data from the probes by media.’
