The central government has introduced the controversial, Goods and Services Bill in the Rajya Sabha on 11 August amid protests by opposition members, led by the Congress. Due to the opposition members, the Bill could not be cleared in Parliament.

Soon after the bill was shouted down by the opposition, who had gathered in the well of the House, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day. The House was earlier adjourned at around 1.30 pm.

Finance minister Arun Jaitley, who tabled the bill in parliament, was met by slogans in the floor of the house as he began reading the clauses of the tax bill. The Bill is to streamline the tax regime and also push the economic growth of the country.

Anand Sharma raised strong objections to listing of the GST Bill in the Rajya Sabha, saying it was not cleared by the business advisory committee (BAC).

No time has been allocated for the Constitutional Amendment Bill, he added.
