BATTLING FOR: Forest dwellers’ rights
ROMA’S HEADSTRONG battle against the state encroaching on the land of forest dwellers began when she read BR Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh. She was the chief lobbyist for the Forest Rights Act passed by state government in 2006. Getting the law was only half the work. In 2007, she fought for its implementation. She organised a mass protest in UP only to be booked under the National Security Act, jailed for 20 days and labelled a Maoist. Today, she is proud of mobilising groups of people and awakening their political consciousness.
