FIR filed against Somnath Bharti, likely to be arrested soon

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA and former Delhi law minister Somnath Bharti is likely to be arrested after his wife, Lipika Mitra filed an FIR against him following a case of domestic violence filed with the Dwarka police station.

Bharti is likely to be charged under sections 307 and 498 (a) of the Indian Penal Code. Bharti has courted many controversies, be it his sexist remarks on women, or his infamous midnight raid at a locality housing African women, who he accused of peddling in drugs.

It may be noted, that a Delhi court had dismissed Bharti’s anticipatory bail plea in July, saying his application was premature as there was no FIR lodged against him.

Additional sessions judge Paramjit Singh granted Bharti liberty to file a fresh application if and when an FIR is lodged in the case.

The court observed that the matter was pending before the Crimes Against Women cell of Delhi Police. It said there was no apprehension of his arrest at this stage.

Lipika had filed a complaint of domestic violence against her husband in June this year. She had said she was not treated well by her politician husband because she didn’t look good.
