The Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is expected to form a “final opinion” on the meeting of Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria with ex-IPL boss Lalit Modi in London based on the report on the matter to be submitted by the Home Secretary. Meanwhile, Neither Maria nor the CM have so far commented on contents of Maria’s letter in response to Fadnavis’ directive to the Mumbai Police Chief to clarify his meeting with Lalit Modi.
The Mumbai top cop however has found support in this trying times. The NCP chief and former BCCI and ICC president Sharad Pawar has backed Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria after he admitted that he had met Lalit Modi in London in 2014. “Anyone can meet anyone abroad, politics shouldn’t be brought into this,” said Pawar in Tasgaon.
Maria is in the news after TV channels reported that the top cop had met Modi in London even as the latter was being pursued by ED. Maria admitted he had met Modi in London in 2014 on the insistence of the latter’s lawyer, Mehmood Abdi and who reportedly explained the threats to Lalit Modi’s life from the underworld. Hence did not want to come to India. Maria reportedly asked Modi to fly down to Mumbai to lodge a complaint. Maria’s meeting with Lalit Modi has added yet another twist to the controversy. Few days back the former BCCI and ICC president Sharad Pawar , while on a visit to London met Lalit Modi and backed Lalit Modi’s claims of threat to his life after checking facts with the Mumbai Police.
