Experts confirm burnt remains in Raigad forest belong to Sheena Bora

A forensic examination has confirmed that the human remains found in in a forest in Raigad, belong to Sheena Bora. Forensic experts collected the samples from the crime scene in Mumbai as well as Kalina FSL .

According to the police, Sheena was allegedly strangled in a car. Her body was burnt before being dumped in a forest in Raigad.

Sources said three tests were conducted by the AIIMS forensic department to prove that the remains belonged to Sheena.

Indrani Mukerjea, along with Khanna and Rai, have been accused of murdering Sheena, 24, Indrani’s daughter from a previous relationship. They have also been accused of disposing the body off.

Indrani and Rai were arrested on 25 August, and Khanna on 26 August. The Special Crime Branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation is probing the case.

The Maharashtra government handed-over the case to CBI in September, saying it was done to clear doubts about the probe and the officers involved. It may be mentioned that the former Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria had personally led the probe.

The police probe had suspected that Indrani was upset with Sheena’s relationship with Rahul, the son of her husband and former Star India CEO Peter Mukerjea, who was also questioned.

Indrani,  currently lodged in Byculla Jail for women, was recently hospitalised after her platelet count dipped drastically, giving rise to speculation that she was suffering from dengue. However, doctors at JJ hospital later made it clear that she had not contracted dengue.

Meanwhile, the court has recorded Shyamvar Rai’s, arrested driver of Indrani Mukerjea, statement under the provisions of Section 164 of CRPC, a CBI official said on 19 November.

The statement will be sent to the trial judge who will unseal it and give copies to the lawyers. “We do not know the statement’s contents as it was recorded in-camera,” said a legal source.

Earlier, Rai wrote to the court and said he wanted to ‘reveal the truth’ about the case. However, Magistrate RV Adone had not recorded his statement saying CBI had not followed proper procedures.

Indrani, 43, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and Rai will be produced in the court on 20 November as their judicial custody expires, even as the investigating agency prepares to file a chargesheet against them.
