Mortal remains of Dr Kalam arrive at Palam Airport in Delhi.
The body of the peoples’ president, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, will be kept at his official residence in New Delhi after it is flown in from Guwahati in a special aircraft. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chiefs of the Army, Air Force and Navy will be present at the Palam airport when the former President Dr Kalam’s mortal remains arrive from Guwahati.
The casket containing the mortal remains will be taken from the airport to his residence at 10 Rajaji Marg in a gun carriage, where people can pay homage to the People’s President for two hours. Public can pay homage to the former President from 4 pm onwards.
Earlier in the morning, in Guwahati, several leaders including Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and senior IAF officials joined in paying tribute to India’s ‘Missile Man’ whose departure has plunged the nation into overwhelming grief. Wrapped in tricolour, the casket carrying his body was taken inside the aircraft as mournful hymns played.
Dr Kalam, 83, died on Monday in Shillong, Meghalaya, suffering a massive cardiac arrest, while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management-Shillong, last evening. After he was wheeled into the ICU at Bethany Hospital, in a critical condition, following the collapse at around 6.30 PM, he was confirmed dead after two hours.
