Saibaba and five others, one got a 10-year jail term, were sentenced for apparently being members of a banned terrorist organisation, criminal conspiracy and waging war against the nation among others.
It may be recalled the professor of English was arrested in May 2014 and was on bail ordered by the Supreme Court since June last year on the ground of failing health.
The BJP has stated that the Gadchiroli Sessions Court’s verdict given to physically challenged DU professor was just and nobody can support terrorism and Naxalism. The party added that he/she will be adequately punished irrespective of the position he or she holds.
While handing down the verdict, the judge did not view sympathetically Saibaba’s disability. “Though he is handicapped, he is mentally equipped enough to cause public disorder and spread disaffection towards the Centre and the state government. He is a leader of the banned political organisation CPI (Maoist) and its frontal organisation RDF.”
An upset Saibaba did not speak to the assembled media persons. Though the police prevented him from speaking to the media, his wife, Vasanta did.
She said that her lawyers will move the Bombay High Court against Saibaba’s incarceration. Vasanta also said it was the first case in Maharashtra where convictions were based on electronic evidence.
