Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on November 3 declared a compensation of Rs 1 crore to the kin of ex-serviceman kin of Ram Kishan Grewal who ended his life.

“We are giving Rs 1 crore to Grewal’s family whom we consider a martyr,” Kejriwal was quoted.

Earlier, the ruling BJP government in Haryana announced to pay Rs 10 lakh compensation to the next of kin of Grewal. It also offered a government job to a family member.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi accompanied by Congress leader Kamal Nath and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal are attending Grewal’s funeral at his native Bamla village. Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’ Brien, who is also attending the funeral, said that he came here on the directions of his leader (Mamata Banerjee).

While this was so, Grewal’s friend made an interesting claim that some army officers had a hand in provoking his friend to end his life. Blasting Gandhi, he said the Congress vice-president was only interested in politics and nothing else. Urging the government to launch an investigation to arrive at the truth, he praised the NDA government for full implementation of OROP scheme.

Earlier, Kejriwal tweeted the Opposition was playing politics over the suicide (as alleged by BJP) for they wanted to give soldiers their rights. He asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi too to meet the family of the ex-serviceman. Robert Vadra, Gandhi’s brother-in-law, sought a probe into the Grewal suicide case.

Meanwhile, voices from within the government were heard denouncing the way the Delhi Police had handled the situation on November 2. There was no harm in letting political leaders meet the ex-serviceman’s family. The Delhi Police, instead of managing the situation well, completely mishandled it, media reports quoted BJP MP Satyapal Singh as saying.
