Death toll in lightning strike rises to 57 in Bihar, 42 in UP


lighting1Around 57 persons in Bihar and 42 in Uttar Pradesh were killed due to lighting following heavy rains on 21 June and 22 June. Also, 24 persons were reported injured in Bihar.

The various parts which experienced heavy rainfall in Bihar include Purnia, Patna Gaya and Bhagalpur.

Bihar meteorological department director AK Sen said, “Incessant rains are likely to hit South Bihar in the next 24 hours. Several parts of North Bihar will also witness heavy rainfall.”

Following the disaster, the Indian Meteorological Department has issued an alert in Supaul, Kishanganj, Siwan, Saran, Madhepura, Saharsa, Araria, Gopalganj districts in North Bihar. West and eastern parts of Champaran have also been alerted.

While the showers were expected to be a relief from the scorching heat, several districts in Bihar have been affected by the devastating lightning strike.
