Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has come under fire by prominent Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband for praising BJP leader LK Advani who is an accused in the Babri Masjid demolition case. Darul Uloom Deoband has lashed out at the SP chief for showering praise on the BJP leader. Questioning secular credentials of Mulayam Singh, clerics alleged that SP chief was hand in glove with BJP and could go to any extent for power.
“Mulayam Singh Yadav has exposed his real character. He has cheated Muslims by praising LK Advani,” said spokesman of the Darul Ulom Deoband Maulana Adil Siddiqui.
“For the SP, Muslims constitute a vote bank and the party has nothing to do with welfare of the community. SP championed the cause of the mosque only to garner Muslim votes, while BJP talked of making a grand temple in Ayodhya only to polarise the Hindu vote bank,” added Maulana Siddiqui.
Mufti Arshad Faroqui, head of Jamia Imamiyaa Mohammed Anwar Shah madrasa in Deoband said, “The votaries of secularism and justice would never tolerate the new found love of Mulayam Singh towards Advani. SP chief appears to be desperate to become the Prime Minister of India.”
Farooqui added that the Muslims supported Samajwadi Party in 2012 assembly elections, but SP government has not fulfilled any promise made during the elections.
The rant of praise for Advani began on 23 March on the 103 birth anniversary of socialist icon Ram Manohar Lohia. Addressing the meeting of party leaders, SP chief that he has to assess the state of corruption in Uttar Pradesh because LK Advani has said that law and order situation in UP is bad. Singh added, “Advani sahab never lies. He always speaks the truth. I will go and meet him again.”
However, a day after endorsing LK Advani, Samajwadi Party ruled out any future alignment with BJP. Clarifying the party stand, General Secretary Ram Gopal Yadav said that praise should not be seen through a political prism. Mulayam Singh’s statement does not mean that Samajwadi Party would have an association with BJP.
Earlier, Ram Gopal Yadav had said that the former BJP-led NDA government was ‘more cohesive’ and Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s style of functioning was better. “Vajpayee was a big personality in the NDA coalition and other members as LK Advani are one of the biggest leaders in the country,” Ram Gopal Yadav added.
Azam Khan, the Muslim mascot of SP and senior Minister in Akhilesh Yadav’s government was quick to rebut the statement. Khan had also rebelled against the party during 2009 parliament elections against the party’s decision to join hands with former BJP leader Kalyan Singh.
“Advani is an accused in the Babri demolition case. The rath yatra taken out by Advani in 1990 had left behind a trail of violence, death and destruction,” Azam Khan said in his home town Rampur on 25 March.
