Dalit Murder In Tamil Nadu: Four Detained


Dalit Tamil NaduFour people have been detained following the death of a Dalit student in a suspected case of honour killing that happened in Tirupur district in Tamil Nadu. Father-in-law of the victim, who surrendered before a court in Dindigul, has reportedly claimed responsibility for the murder.

Earlier, a viral CCTV footage showed a gang of unidentified men armed with hatchets and sickles rode hacked 22-year-old Shankar in broad daylight into Udumalaipettai town in Tirupur district. The victim died en route to hospital. His wife was also wounded and admitted to the ICU.

The wife of the dalit man, according to media reports, later told police that her family was responsible for the gruesome act. Sankar and his wife Kausala reportedly fell in love while studying in a private engineering college in Pollachi and few months ago they got married against the wishes of the girl’s family.

Demanding compensation of Rs. 10 lakh and a government job for Kausalya, relatives of the Shan,kar had, on Monday resorted to a road blockade for around five hours. Kausalya is a member of the dominant Thevar caste. She blamed her family members for her husband’s death in a statement to police and she also told the police that she had complained about the threat from her family earlier.
