In a shocking incident, which proves that even judiciary isn’t spared from the evils of the caste system, five upper caste men raped a Dalit student in Rohtak, Haryana yet again in three years. The latest rape was done in a bid to pressurise the victim into withdrawing the previous case.
The victim’s family was threatened by the accused after the first assault incident in 2013 in Bhiwani and was forced to shift to Rohtak.
Locals found the girl lying unconscious near Sukhpura Chowk with all her clothes torn on July 3 night. She was rushed to Rohtak Civil Hospital from where she was referred to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences by doctors the next day.
The police recorded her statement and a case was registered against the five accused namely Anil alias Bittu, Raju alias Jagmohan, Sandeep Singh, Mausam Kumar and Aakash. Two of the accused are also Dalits, while the three others belong to an ‘upper caste’. They all belong to Bhiwani and are absconding.
Three days have passed since the incident happened, but the police are yet to make any arrests.
In-charge of the case, Deputy Superintendent of Police Pushpa Khatri, said two of the accused were arrested in 2013, but no other names were mentioned in the FIR. The accused were arrested but were later released on bail.
“The accused were constantly threatening us to compromise outside the court. They even offered us a hefty amount for settlement. But we didn’t agree. They are men from upper caste and we are Dalits. It seems they can do whatever they want without fearing the law,” said the victim’s brother.
He added, “We have also requested for police protection, but to no avail. Despite repeated demands, the police didn’t include SC/ST Act in the FIR”.
Several Dalit organisations have held demonstrations on July 17 at the residence of Rohtak MLA, Manish Grove, to protest against the crime.
Meanwhile, the police have formed teams to arrest the accused but haven’t succeeded yet.
