A special CBI court on January 17 charged Indrani Mukerjea, her husband and former media baron Peter Mukerjea and her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna with murder and criminal conspiracy in the infamous Sheena murder case.
All the accused, except Peter, were found guilty for trying to kill Mikhail, Indrani’s son, and trying to tamper/erase evidence. The court also charged Indrani under Section 471 for presenting forged documents. The trial in the case will begin on February 1.
Indrani’s former driver Shyamvar Rai, who had turned approver, was absent from the court as he would testify a a witness in the case.
Earlier, the special Central Bureau of Investigation court had fixed January 17 to frame charges against the accused.
Indrani, Peter and Sanjeev who sat separately in the dock, were later seen chatting passionately with their lawyers outside the court.
Later, she told the court that she wanted to divorce husband Peter Mukerjea. Special judge HS Mahajan, stating it was her personal matter, told her her she didn’t require the court’s permission in this regard.
The Sheena Bora’s murder came to light in 2015 when a former driver confessed to the police for allegedly assisting Indrani in committing the crime. Sheena was allegedly strangled to death by Indrani with the help of her former husband Sanjeev Khanna in 2012.
Meanwhile, the CBI has alleged that Sheena was murdered by her mother over a property dispute. Peter says the CBI was aware of the murder plan throughout.
The lawyers of both Indrani and Peter Mukherjea have argued that none of the charges can be proved by the CBI.
