That is a four decade old story, but the rivalry between the football teams of both nations still continues. And now they are facing each other in one of the biggest football tournaments in the world. Chile is aiming their first International title. They finished third in 1962 World Cup and Runners-up in 1955, 1956, 1979 and 1987.They are yet to win silverware in their long football history. On the other hand Argentina, with one of the best team they ever had is trying to win an International tournament after 22 years.
Chile and Argentina played some good football throughout the tournament. Both teams displayed the Latin American style of attacking football. Despite some refereeing flaws, so far the tournament has attracted the football fans throughout the world.
All eyes will be on Lionel Messi, who is finally showing some fine displays in the Argentina jersey. In the semifinal against Paraguay he shut the mouth of all critics by displaying fantastic show and assisting three goals. He has netted only one goal by converting a penalty, but he was the man behind the most of Argentina’s goals. He has had 17 shots on goal from open play — more than any other player in the tournament — but his failure to convert those shots into goal is a headache for them.
Meanwhile, Argentina coach Gerardo Martino defended Messi by saying that he does not need to score goals but will be happy with the assists and play making role. Messi and co. is aiming their first ever Cup win in the Argentina Jersey. Besides, Messi, Angel Di Maria, Javier Mascherano, Sergio Aguero and Marcus Rojo have had a quite a good tournament so far. If they play up to their potential easily Argentina will lift the Cup.
Chile on the other hand started the tournament as one of the favourites as hosts played brilliant attacking football. They displayed fine a show as a team every players played his part. They won the match as a team, not by a single player’s cameo. If Arturo Vidal, Alexis Sanches, Eduardo Vargas and Claudio Bravo play up to their potential it will not be that much easy for Argentina. It will be a high voltage match in the field so as in the stands. Hairs will be pulled for the greatest show down in the Latin American football.
