After being decimated in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, there is no relief for the Congress party as far as embarrassment is concerned. The party is already facing the heat with its MP Shashi Tharoor under media spotlight over his wife Sunanda Pushkar’s death. Now, reports have it that a book on the Congress president Sonia Gandhi, written by Spanish author Javier Moro – The Red Sari: A Dramatized Biography of Sonia Gandhi – is set to hit stands soon.
The book, was first published in Spanish with the title ‘El Sari Rojo’ in 2008, had created a controversy with the Congress chief’s lawyers then describing it as containing “untruths, half truths, falsehoods and defamatory statements” and served Moro with a legal notice in 2010. According to a report in ‘The Indian Express’ in 2010, Roli Books’ plans to publish the “dramatised biography” in India was stalled by protests from the party and threats of lawsuits. In 2015, however, the publisher is going ahead with its plan to bring out the book.
The book’s English version was not allowed to be released in India in 2010. This was the time when the Congress-led UPA was in power and Sonia Gandhi had tremendous clout being the chairperson of the UPA and Congress president. It was hence natural that with UPA in power the book would not be allowed to be launched. But with NDA in power now , the book has got a new lease of life .
With party’s morale at its lowest ebb, the revelations on Sonia Gandhi in this book will no doubt make the Congress jittery and nervous. It is sure to give the ruling NDA more ammunition to embarrass the party.
