Child trafficking case: Juhi Chowdhury sent to police remand for 12 days

Juhi ChowdhuryJuhi Chowdhury, an accused in the Jalpaiguri child trafficking case, was on March 2 produced in the chief judicial magistrate’s court in Jalpaiguri and remanded to 12 days’ police custody.

Akhil Biswas, the lawyer representing Juhi, said she was not involved with the NGO run by Chandana.

Earlier, the BJP, West Bengal unit removed Juhi as general secretary of the BJP Mahila Morcha following her arrest. The party also expelled her father, Rabindranarayan, as a committee member in the state unit.

During the court hearing, the state BJP president Dilip Ghosh had appealed he be allowed to be present during Juhi’s questioning. “The court accepted the appeal,” he said.

While this was so, it was learnt that did not rule out the possibility of the party providing legal help to Juhi.

The CID had deliberately delayed Juhi’s arrest and alleged a “political conspiracy”.”I wonder why there had been a deliberate delay in her arrest. I can smell a bigger political conspiracy in this by Trinamool Congress, said state BJP president Dilip Ghosh.

It may be recalled Juhi, arrested from near the Indo-Nepal border in Darjeeling district, had been absconding for the past 10 days, after the prime accused in the case told the CID that she (Juhi) had promised to let the Union government help them by using her clout in the central leadership in the Jalpaiguri child trafficking case.

Meanwhile, many in the BJP West Bengal unit feel she was removed in haste after the prime accused made a statement that Juhi had accompanied her to Delhi and held talks with senior party leaders such as BJP West Bengal in-charge Kailash Vijayvargiya.
