The CBI has charged former media baron Peter Mukerjea with murder, destruction of evidence and criminal conspiracy in the Sheena Bora murder case.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has submitted a supplementary charge-sheet in the case against Peter before Additional Metropolitan Magistrate RV Adone in a special CBI Magistrate’s court in Mumbai.
The statement of a key witness, detailing Peter’s role in the murder conspiracy, was also submitted to the court in a sealed envelope.
The CBI took over the investigation into Sheena Bora murder case from the Mumbai Police late last year. The agency states Peter and Indrani were not happy with Sheena’s relationship with Rahul, Peter’s son, and that he (Peter) had told Prithul Sanghavi, his friend, that it (the relationship) was not right.
Peter was charged with Section 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder), 302 (punishment for murder), 328 (causing hurt), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence), 203 (giving false information about an offence committed), 307 (attempt to murder), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 468 (forgery) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) of the Indian Penal Code.
The investigating agency also suspected that financial transactions must have caused Sheena’s murder. However, as per sources, the charge-sheet does not mention any financial dealings.
In the charge-sheet, the CBI has mentioned call data records that Peter spoke to his wife and Indrani between April 24 and 25. It is suspected the calls were made to exchange ‘updates’ on Sheena’s murder.
The CBI filed the chargesheet within the 90-day deadline as ordered under Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) to prevent Peter from applying for bail.
Meanwhile, Peter told Indian Express, “I will study the chargesheet. But I stand by what I said when I was arrested. I have nothing to do with the case and am not aware of the conspiracy.”
Peter was sent to Arthur Road jail while the co-accused Sanjeev Khanna and Shyamvar Rai, Indrani’s former driver, too, are also lodged there. Indrani is languishing at the Byculla Jail for women.
