Water recedes in some areas but flood situation remains grim

It was the 564th birth anniversary of one of the Assamese Vaishnavite saint-scholar and socio cultural reformer Srimanta Shankar Dev, however, there were no celebrations. Majuli River Island in Jorhat district, the cradle of Assamese Viashnavite culture, continued to battle flood waters on Tuesday 26 September, as more than 200 villages remained cut off from mainland for the six consecutive day.

Every year Srimanta Shankar Dev’s birth anniversary is celebrated with great pomp and gaiety in the Naam Ghar and Satras of Majuli with Nat and Baona performances, the Sattriya performing art form which is also a medium of worship. The situation is Majuli remains grim, although flood water has receded by a foot, power supply has also been restored in some parts. The internationally famed River Island is home to 30 Satras, the Vaishnavite monasteries, some of which are more than 500 years old.

Meanwhile, flood waters showed receding trends in some areas of Upper Assam, but are on the rise again in parts of lower Assam. The overall flood situation in Assam remained grim, as the death toll rose to 18 on Tuesday. Three more deaths have been reported from Lakhimpur and Hajo. According to official sources, seven people are still missing, six in the worst affected Tinsukia and one in neighbouring Dibrugarh district. The infrastructure loss has been enormous in the week long floods. In Barpeta roads have been badly damaged in four places. Reports pouring in from across the state of fresh breaches in embankments and dykes. Brahmaputra is still flowing above danger level at Nematighat in Jorhat, Tezpur ,Dhubri Guwahati and Goalpara. Its tributaries Subansiri is over shooting at Badatighat in Lakhimpur, Dhansiri at Numaligarh in Golaghat and Jia Bharali at Sonitpur. Even the State capital Dispur and the main city Guwahati have been affected.
