Patidar reservation agitation leader Hardik Patel on 30 September met various caste leaders as part of efforts to consolidate his agitation in Delhi. Representatives of Kurmis and Gujjars among others attended a meet organised by the Akhil Bhartiya Patel Navnirman Sena chief.
Patel had held a meeting with leaders of some of these communities in the national capital last month too. The young Patidar leader has led massive rallies of Patels in Gujarat, demanding Hardik Patel hold a meeting with leaders of several other castes for consolidating his agitation.
His agitation has shaken the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Gujarat after he organised a massive rally in Ahmedabad on August 25. The violence that followed his detention engulfed many parts of the state, resulting in death of 10 people.
Hardik, convener of the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), had announced on Friday that he would launch a “lollipop movement” to register displeasure over the package. He has also announced support to Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar’s bid to return to power in Bihar. Nitish Kumar belonged to his community.
“Kumar is a good chief minister. Hence, we will support him in the election,” he said here. Assembly polls in Bihar kick-off next month. Following the announcement by Gujarat government of a package for the economically-backward category, Hardik said that what had been offered was a ‘lollipop’ even as he maintained that reservation should be on the basis of caste alone.
