Bengaluru will host an ATP challenger tournament from October 19 to 25, after a gap of 12 years.
While the qualifying rounds will be held on October 17 and 18, top single players Somdev Devvarman, Yuki Bhambri, and Ramkumar Ramanathan, are expected to take part in the tournament, which has $50,000 prize money for the men’s event. A few top-100 players from 8 to 10 countries, will also participate.
The Karnataka State Lawn Association had last conducted such an event in 2003, when Gregory Carraz walked away with a grand double.
The Frenchman beat Belgian Gilles Elseneer 6-4, 7-6 (4) to win the singles crown and partnered with countryman Rodolphe Cadart, to clinch the doubles title.
The ATP Challenger is a like a breath of fresh air to the calendar that Karnataka State Lawn Association has drawn up, including hosting Davis Cup and ITF tournaments.
The winner of the event will earn 80 points and the finalist will gain 48 points.
The semifinalists, quarterfinalists and pre-quarterfinalists will collect 29, 15 and seven points. Qualifiers stand to earn 3bonus points.
