Aurungabad boat tragedy: 1 dead, 9 missing

Atleast one person died and eight persons are still missing when a boat carrying 18 persons capsized midstream in the swollen Punpun river of Bihar’s Aurangabad district on August 23.

Some of the people belonging to Kalen village of Obra assembly constituency were returning to their village after necessary items from nearby Khundwa market on the other side of the river when the incident happened.

According to reports, the boat was carrying 18 people including two school children. While eight people have been rescued, 9 others are still missing.

River Punpun is overflowing due to heavy rains in Bihar and Jharkhand.

Aurangabad District Magistrate Kunwal Tanuj, who visited the site of tragedy said, “One body has been fished out and search is on for eight others in the boat tragedy,” according to the media reports.

While the search operation will continue today, nine persons have been declared safe who swam after the accident.

The personnel of State Disaster Management Force (SDRF) has been assigned the task to trace the missing, Tanuj said.

According to the DM, the district administration has banned plying of private boats in the river.
