ATale of Two Terrorists and Nationalism

The so called celebration of Afzal Guru’  s death anniversary by some student groups in the Jawaharlal Nehru University spiralled into a major national controversy. The entire Sangh Parivar, including the key ministries of the nation, the Home and Human Resource Development, came out strongly saying that such support to Afzal Guru in any form is anti-national. Those who gave speeches against his hanging or any other thing related to him is a seditious act. Afzal Guru is a Muslim, who tried to attack the Indian parliament. In that case he got arrested and was given the capital punishment. His is an act of terrorism and the Indian judiciary treated it that way. I agree that the nation should also treat it that way only.

Let us take the case of Nathuram Godse. He shot Mahatma Gandhi dead in public prayer meeting, terrorizing all those men and women who were in that meeting. In any historical sense Gandhi’s life is far more valuable than any building in anywhere in the country. The Indian judiciary treated Nathuram Godse as a terrorist and killed him also by hanging. Nathuram Godse was a Hindu  Brahmin at that. Though I disagree with many of Gandhi’s views I agree with the Indian judiciary that Godse was a terrorist and the whole nation should treat him that way.
