After student protests against Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani increased rapidly in wake of Rohith Vemula’s suicide, the union ministry is likely to upgrade her security to ‘Z’ category, under which 20 security men will guard her 24×7. rani, who is already entitled to Y security category as a cabinet minister, will be guarded by 20 security men at any given point of time under the new scheme.
A top government official told the media that there had been reports that her security was found to be inadequate due to sudden protests by students and some miscreants might take advantage of these protests and try to harm her.
Once the security cover is bolstered, Irani will be among those few cabinet ministers like home minister Rajnath Singh, finance minister Arun Jaitley, transport minister Nitin Gadkari, who enjoy the advantage of getting ‘Z’ category security. National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and BJP president Amit Shah are also in the list.
It may be recalled The HRD minister found herself in the centre of storm when she broke her silence on the suicide of a young research scholar at Hyderabad University and said at a press briefing that the incident was being misrepresented with “malicious intent” as a “caste battle”. “I am compelled to come out today because there has been a malicious attempt to present this as a Dalit versus non-Dalit issue to ignite passions. The student (ABVP leader Nandanam Susheel Kumar) who was attacked was himself an OBC student,” she said at a press conference, flanked by Social Justice Empowerment Minister Thaawar Chand Gehlot and Minister of State for Commerce Nirmala Sitharaman.
The tragic Vemula’s suicide has noqw snowballed into a political controversy with agitating students and political parties targeting vice chancellor Appa Rao, MoS Labour and Employment Bandaru Dattatreya and Irani.
